Mihara Yasuhiro - Paris Menswear Fashion Week Spring Summer 2013

Music and art seem to go hand with avant-garde designer Mihara Yasuhiro. Last year he featured "Samurai" guitarist Miyavi as a backdrop to his Fall & Winter 2012 collection. This year, a painter whimsically played to Mihara Yasuhiro's color palette that reminded one of a mix of resort gone utilitarian. With deep rich cerulean blues, corals and khakis grounded with dark details in black, Yasuhiro's designs are relaxed but still edgy. Mandarin collared jackets, suits contrasted with leather, shorts and motorcycle style jackets. Snakeskin shorts were another interesting juxtaposition. The designer created various shapes that were both streamlined and oversize, melding together the looks with unique prints.

Yashuhiro has been quoted as saying: "Inspiration comes into your mind suddenly. On the one hand, we have learned so many different things from the past, from history. On the other hand, we are living in the present. These two things lead us to contradiction. However, we have to move our mind to reconsider and to create design elements through finding out something new."

You were able to see the resemblance of the past in this collection. There were moments where the designer gave us looks that reminded one of a less tailored era: relaxed shoulders, pants with a higher inseam and a looser overall fit.  When you look at his overall design, it perfectly balances tailored shapes with a unique ability to mix and match fabrics and textures in order to give his clothes a rare quality.

The infusion of art was interesting; one that brought you squarely back to the colors that dominated the entire collection-bold black and Khaki. Splashes of color were spattered on the suits reminding me of Duran Duran's "Rio" album. One of my favorite pieces was a pale blue suit and the sunburst shirt in coral pictured below brought my eye to that color over and over again. I’m a sucker for bright colors that are used in a bold and stylish ways. Mihara Yasuhiro's designs gave me the sense of being right in the middle of the Shibuya district, where all the fashion magic happens.

Yasuhiro's nod to the past while looking squarely in the present is seen by his use of utilitarian influences that are still being used by designers today. His coats, vests and jackets all have that feel without straying to far away from his avant-garde tradition. Overall, the collection was a solid, mix of the past, present and future.
